چکیده

We present the results of 3-dimensional simulations of the direct collapse to a black hole of a rotating, 60M⊙, zero metallicity, population III star. Because the structure of this star (angular momentum, density and temperature profiles) is similar to many collapsar gamma-ray burst progenitors, these calculations have implications beyond the fate of population III stars. These simulations provide a first 3-dimensional look at a realistic collapsar progenitor, and the results are very different from any previous 2-dimensional calculations. If the angular momentum of the progenitor is high, non-axisymmetric instabilities in the collapsing core cause spiral structures to form, and these structures shape later outflows. These outflows are driven by the imbalance between viscous heating and inefficient neutrino cooling and ultimately develop into a 10 erg explosion. Without magnetic fields, this collapse will not produce relativistic jets, but the explosion is indeed a hypernova. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of such calculations on the explosions, nucleosynthesis, neutrino flux and gravitational wave emission from the collapse of massive stars. The long, the short and the weak: the origin of gamma-ray bursts.

The origin of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is one of the most interesting puzzles in recent astronomy. During the last decade a consensus has formed that long GRBs (LGRBs) arise from the collapse of massive stars, and that short GRBs (SGRBs) have a different origin, most likely neutron star mergers. A key ingredient of the collapsar model that explains how the collapse of massive stars produces a GR...

On the Progenitors of Collapsars

We study the evolution of stars that may be the progenitors of common (long-soft) GRBs. Bare rotating helium stars, presumed to have lost their envelopes due to winds or companions, are followed from central helium ignition to iron core collapse. Including realistic estimates of angular momentum transport [1] by non-magnetic processes and mass loss, one is still able to create a collapsed objec...

Three routes to jet collimation by the Balbus-Hawley magnetorotational instability

Three completely different lines of work have recently led to the conclusion that the magnetorotational instability (MRI) may create a hoop-stress that collimates jets. One argument is based upon consideration that magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, in general, and turbulence driven by the MRI, in particular, is more nearly viscoelastic than it is viscous. Another argument is based upon the disper...

Features of Nucleosynthesis and Neutrino Emission from Collapsars

In this study we present two indicators that will reflect the difference between collapsars and normal collapse-driven supernovae. They are products of explosive nucleosynthesis and neutrino emission. In the collapsar model, it is natural to consider that the product of explosive nucleosynthesis depends on the zenith angle because the system becomes highly asymmetric in order to generate a fire...

Wave Modes in Collapsar Jets

Collapsars may be a source for the “long” Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) in the BATSE catalog. Collapsars may radiate gamma rays anisotropically by beamed jet emission close to the observer’s line of sight. These jets must penetrate the radiation-dominated medium of their collapsar progenitor and break through its atmosphere in order to produce a GRB. We present a study of previously published, axisym...
